About the role

  • Controller managing financial operations for SewerAI, transforming underground infrastructure with AI-driven insights. Leading accurate month-end close, compliance, and team development.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the close: Own a timely and accurate month-end close, including consolidations, reconciliations, accruals, and variance analysis.
  • Strengthen controls: Implement durable internal controls, policies, and documentation that ensure GAAP compliance and audit readiness.
  • Own revenue accounting: Direct ASC 606 compliance, usage- and subscription-based revenue, deferred revenue, and billing-to-revenue accuracy.
  • Establish operational truth: Build and maintain a reliable source of truth across ARR, invoicing, collections, and customer usage data.
  • Optimize working capital: Strengthen billing cadence, tighten collections, and improve visibility into spend and procurement to support healthier cash flow.
  • Elevate financial data quality: Partner cross-functionally to tighten handoffs, improve data integrity, and strengthen internal and external reporting flows.
  • Drive systems transformation: Lead our ERP migration and modernization of accounting software and workflows.
  • Lead audit & technical accounting: Serve as the primary contact for auditors, overseeing documentation, support schedules, and general audit readiness.
  • Oversee core operations: Manage AP, payroll, vendor onboarding, procurement workflows, and controls around spend.
  • Develop the team: Mentor and grow the accounting function, elevating structure, accuracy, and operational excellence.

Requirements

  • Experienced accounting leader with 8–12+ years of experience in SaaS or high-growth technology environments; CPA strongly preferred.
  • GAAP and ASC 606 expertise, including subscription models, usage-based contracts, deferred revenue, and complex revenue arrangements.
  • Process and systems builder with a history of designing documentation, controls, and scalable workflows from the ground up.
  • ERP transformation experience, ideally with NetSuite or similar platforms, including integrations and control frameworks.
  • Audit leadership capability, with experience preparing for and managing annual audits, strengthening controls, and producing clean reconciliations.
  • Clear, confident communicator able to translate financial detail into clear insights for executives, finance partners, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • People-first leader with the ability to mentor and grow an accounting team while elevating accuracy, discipline, and rigor.
  • Willingness and ability to work in a hybrid environment from our Walnut Creek office, in person on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
