About the role

  • Research Assistant supporting a research project focused on detecting power outages caused by natural hazards using satellite image data. Involves data processing, analysis, visualization, and preparation of written deliverables.

Responsibilities

  • Process and analyze satellite imagery to detect power outages and assess data quality.
  • Develop and apply geospatial and statistical techniques for data interpretation.
  • Create visualizations, including maps, charts, and reports, to effectively communicate findings.
  • Prepare written summaries and documentation of methods and results.
  • Conduct troubleshooting and refine analysis workflows as needed.
  • Mentor team members on programming and data analysis techniques.
  • Actively participate in research discussions and provide input on methodological improvements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in geospatial science, environmental science, data science, computer science, or a related field;
  • experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and remote sensing tools;
  • experience with programming languages such as Python, R, Markdown;
  • familiarity with satellite imagery processing (e.g., VIIRS, MODIS, Sentinel, Landsat).
  • strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
