Responsibilities
Lead Grade Development projects with some supervision following Kennametal’s stage gate process.
Substantially plan and execute global R&D projects as a Project Leader or Team Member.
Interact with Marketing, Sales, Manufacturing, and Customers on a global basis to grow Kennametal’s market share in metal cutting tools.
Provide ideas for optimizing the materials portfolio on request.
Substantially prepare and evaluate experimental materials through metal cutting and analytical materials testing.
Summarize results and conclude findings to present to the technical project team.
Substantially manage scale-up products into manufacturing and assist with commercial launch of the product collaborating and guiding manufacturing and marketing teams.
Grow understanding of material characteristics and properties important for various metal cutting applications and support sales and customers jointly with application and/or product guidance.
Visit key customers to evaluate their machining needs and field test newly developed products.
Support optimization of cutting tool materials portfolio through product lifecycle management.
Requirements
BS or Masters degree (preferred) in Materials Science, Engineering or related field.
Strong communication and project leadership skills.
Prefer experience in cemented carbides, PCD/PcBN based superhard materials, or PVD/CVD coatings.
Basic understanding of metal cutting applications (e.g. turning, milling, drilling) and tool wear mechanisms are a plus.
Familiarity with cutting tool design, cutting tool manufacturing, or materials analysis techniques can be instrumental.
All applicants must have strong communication and project leadership skills, be well versed in PC software applications, and exhibit excellent oral and written technical communication skills.
