About the role

  • Associate or Deputy General Counsel managing U.S. retail brokerage operations at Howden. Acting as a trusted advisor and legal expert in a dynamic environment.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted second-in-command to the General Counsel supporting U.S. retail insurance brokerage operations
  • Help shape a high-growth business in a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment
  • Act as a legal advisor covering both specialty and retail insurance broking lines
  • Support the General Counsel in business strategy, governance, and operational planning
  • Participate in executive-level discussions providing legal insight on commercial and regulatory matters
  • Assist in developing and implementing legal policies and procedures for a high-growth business model
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, as well as industry-specific regulations
  • Manage U.S.-based litigation and disputes, coordinating with external counsel
  • Collaborate with Chief Risk Officer, Chief Data Privacy Officer, and IT to build compliant systems

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school and active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • Minimum of 10 years of post-qualification experience (PQE)
  • Significant in-house counsel experience preferred
  • Strong background in U.S. insurance, commercial, and regulatory law
  • Deep knowledge of the retail insurance brokerage landscape and regulatory frameworks for specialty and broking
  • Experience in private equity-backed businesses or dynamic environments highly valued
  • Experience working in a multinational or matrixed environment is desirable
  • Strategic and operational leadership
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • High integrity and sound judgment
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across time zones
  • Strong organizational and project management capabilities
