About the role

  • Solicitor providing legal support for the City’s planning and development divisions in Hamilton. Responsible for legal advocacy, advice, and minimizing risks regarding planning and administrative law.

Responsibilities

  • Support the City’s planning and development and engineering divisions with legal advocacy.
  • Provide high quality and effective legal advice and services to management and staff.
  • Develop proactive strategies to protect the interests of the City and reduce legal risks.
  • Ensure legal services contribute to effective programs and services including research and advice.
  • Review and prepare documents, policies and procedures for legal compliance.
  • Provide legal opinions and advice on matters posing significant risks to the City.
  • Work in accordance with applicable Health and Safety legislation and City policies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Laws degree or Juris Doctor (JD) from a recognized University.
  • Membership in good standing in the Law Society of Ontario.
  • 3-5 years of post-call experience in planning, development and administrative law.
  • Demonstrated interest in municipal law.
  • High level of professionalism and integrity.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Highly developed analytical and business planning skills.
  • Experience in designing and delivering customer focused programs and services.
  • Excellent presentation, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Understanding of key statutes, regulations and by-laws affecting the Division and municipality.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations.
  • Computer skills in a Windows environment utilizing MS Office software.
