About the role

  • Head of Engineering at GLS/NXT overseeing engineering for logistics technology solutions. Leading teams and shaping engineering practices in Berlin location.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop Engineering Leadership and their teams (30-35 engineers total), creating an environment where people do their best work.
  • Own the growth and wellbeing of the engineering org - hiring, onboarding, performance, and retention.
  • Be the engineering culture carrier: fostering ownership, technical excellence, and psychological safety across teams.
  • Establish and continuously improve the standards, processes, and tooling that enable teams to ship reliable, secure, and high-quality software at pace.
  • Own the engineering governance framework: tech stack decisions, cost management, security posture, and architectural standards.
  • Drive cross-team alignment on best practices, ensuring consistency without stifling autonomy.
  • Be a credible technical partner - able to get into the weeds on distributed systems, cloud architecture, and engineering trade-offs when teams need it.
  • Evaluate and guide architectural decisions, ensuring our systems scale to meet the demands of high-volume, mission-critical logistics operations.
  • Stay close to the stack without being in the critical path of delivery.
  • Collaborate closely with Product leadership on roadmap planning - contributing the engineering perspective on feasibility, risk, and opportunity.
  • Act as the bridge between business objectives and engineering execution, translating strategy into team-level priorities.

Requirements

  • Proven track record as an Engineering Manager or similar role - ideally in a fast-moving startup or scale-up environment.
  • Experience leading and growing engineering teams of 20+ people, including managing managers.
  • Background in building and operating distributed systems at scale, with a solid understanding of what it takes to run high-traffic, high-availability products in production.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS and modern cloud-native architectures.
  • Servant leader at heart - you build trust through listening, removing blockers, and making your teams better.
  • Extreme ownership: you hold yourself accountable and instil that same culture in your teams, without blame or excuses.
  • Strong communicator: you can talk architecture with engineers and strategy with the management in the same afternoon, and you're equally good at both.
  • Data-driven: you make decisions grounded in evidence, not gut feel alone, and you build that habit into your teams.
  • Solid grasp of modern backend engineering: microservices, event-driven architectures, API design, containerisation.
  • Comfortable evaluating engineering costs, tooling choices, and build-vs-buy trade-offs at an organisational level.

Benefits

  • Dynamic workplace: A digital environment with international projects and space to learn and grow
  • Flexible work conditions: Hybrid working mode with a tailored remote policy.
  • Focus on learning: A personal budget (1.000€) for learning and development initiatives.
  • Physical space for ideas: A great office space in Berlin Mitte with top-tier equipment.
  • Transparent and competitive compensation: A salary package that reflects your expertise and experience.
  • Active participation: A clear bonus system enabling participation in your and the team’s performance
  • Engaging team culture: Monthly team cooking, regular events and offsites
  • Vacation policy: 30 days of yearly holiday
  • Reward system: Rewards for the recommendation of additional team members
