About the role

• Backend Engineer developing scalable, reliable systems for EvenUp’s AI-driven legal tech platform in Toronto. Collaborating with teams to enhance product offerings through innovative engineering practices.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and optimize robust, scalable backend systems that power EvenUp’s AI-driven platform, ensuring reliability and performance at scale
• Work closely with engineering teams to understand new product requirements and deliver high-quality, scalable solutions
• Collaborate with world-class engineers on challenging backend problems, including data processing, infrastructure, and integration of large-scale machine learning models
• Drive the development of key backend frameworks, libraries, and systems to enhance EvenUp’s product offerings
• Contribute to EvenUp's engineering culture by helping new engineers understand what it takes to build systems in a Silicon Valley-style startup, while ensuring quality and best practices in a fast-paced environment
• Actively participate in team building and mentorship to help build a world-class engineering team in Toronto
• Own complex engineering projects from inception to deployment, ensuring they meet EvenUp’s high standards for performance, scalability, and security

Requirements

• Extensive experience in backend development and a strong understanding of distributed systems
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Go, Java, or C++, with the ability to write clean, maintainable, and production-ready code
• Proven experience building scalable, reliable systems and APIs in a high-performance environment
• Experience working in a startup environment and thriving in a dynamic, fast-paced culture
• Strong understanding of modern engineering practices, including test-driven development, code reviews, and deployment pipelines
• Experience in cloud infrastructure, preferably with technologies like AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, and Terraform
• Excellent problem-solving skills and communication abilities with cross-functional teams
• Leadership potential to mentor junior engineers and guide best practices as the team grows
