About the role

  • Senior Geotechnical Engineer delivering specialist geotechnical engineering services for ESB. Collaborating closely with teams to ensure timely, high-quality project delivery while supporting Ireland’s Net Zero 2040 strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced geotechnical expertise and technical leadership on complex and challenging projects, ensuring high‑quality engineering outcomes.
  • Perform detailed geotechnical design and analysis, including foundations, retaining structures, ground improvement, earthworks, and solutions for soft ground conditions such as peat.
  • Assess geotechnical stability and performance, including slope stability analyses, dam and embankment evaluations, and interpretation of soil and rock parameters to support design and construction.
  • Develop, maintain, and manage Geotechnical Risk Registers, establishing mitigation strategies and response plans throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Lead and oversee ground investigation activities, including specifying, procuring, managing, and interpreting GI data, supported by desk studies and site walk‑overs.
  • Conduct failure investigations and root cause analyses, preparing comprehensive technical reports and ensuring compliance with geotechnical standards and best practices.
  • Maintain strong commercial awareness across all project stages, ensuring geotechnical inputs support efficient, cost‑effective, and value‑driven delivery.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years relevant geotechnical consultancy experience.
  • Familiarity with applicable Codes and Standards and industry current best practice
  • Experience with soil mechanics computer analysis and design packages (e.g. Oasys suite etc)
  • Extensive experience of working with a wide range of challenging ground types including peat and karst ground
  • Knowledge of recent Geotechnical Research/Developments pertinent to our business
  • Excellent Communication and report writing skills
  • Experience with working in multi-disciplinary teams delivering small to large scale projects.
  • Experience in the use of Eurocodes
  • Full driving licence and access to a car
  • Level 8 Degree in Civil Engineering
