About the role

  • Lead a research team focused on advancing AI-driven language technology at DeepL. Shaping research agendas and collaborating across teams to deliver impactful features.

Responsibilities

  • Own both people leadership and technical direction for a team of research scientists and data engineers.
  • Shape the research agenda, build a high-performance culture, and convert breakthroughs into production impact across DeepL’s products.
  • Partner closely with Product, Engineering, and Go-to-Market teams to translate research advances into features.
  • Define and communicate team’s strategic goals, roadmap, and success metrics in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Create conditions for rapid, reliable delivery by clarifying priorities and enabling effective cross-team collaboration.
  • Inspired by cutting-edge academic research and by driving innovation in Language AI.
  • Contribute hands-on when needed—review code, design experiments, analyze results, and help unblock critical paths.

Requirements

  • (preferable PhD) degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or a comparable subject.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading and scaling teams, ideally in a global, high-growth scale-up, and research-intensive environment.
  • Solution-oriented mindset with the ability to navigate through ambiguity and change effectively.
  • Hands-on experience in: Software development: in the context of data science, ML engineering, systems engineering, or distributed services.
  • Technical and people leadership.
  • Deep Learning expertise.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to closely collaborate with other teams across the organization.
  • High level of English proficiency (knowledge of German and other languages is an advantage).
