Responsibilities

  • Review construction plans, specifications, and calculations for compliance with building codes, zoning regulations, and other applicable standards
  • Evaluate structural integrity, fire & life safety, accessibility, and energy efficiency of proposed building designs
  • Communicate with architects, engineers, contractors, and clients to resolve plan deficiencies and provide technical guidance
  • Prepare detailed reports outlining review findings, code violations, and recommended corrections
  • Participate in meetings and consultations with internal staff and external stakeholders to discuss project requirements and review processes
  • Stay updated on changes in building codes, regulations, and industry standards to ensure accurate structural plan assessments
  • Collaborate with other departments, to address interdisciplinary aspects of plan reviews
  • Interact professionally with internal and external stakeholders, fostering positive and cooperative working relationships and promoting a culture of compliance and safety
  • Perform assigned duties within the supported agency’s guidance, culture, and approach
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Three years of increasingly responsible experience in structural design and/or plan checking or construction project management
  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major work in structural engineering, civil engineering, architecture or a closely related field
  • Possession of a certificate of registration as a professional engineer in the State of California
  • Certification as a Residential and Building Plans Examiner, as issued by the International Code Council, is required
  • Strong knowledge of building codes, seismic design, and regulatory requirements
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Effective communication abilities, both written and verbal
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proficiency in using computer-aided design (CAD) software, Blue Beam Revu and other plan review tools
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to inspection sites as required.
