About the role

  • Manager Geophysics and Data at BHP, influencing geophysics applications and leading geoscience research initiatives. Building relationships across exploration and appraisal groups.

Responsibilities

  • Influence leading practice in the understanding and application of geophysics to remotely sense, image and interpret the subsurface to aid the access, appraisal and extraction of mineral and petroleum resources.
  • Champion best practice related to the acquisition, management, analysis and delivery of geoscientific data and information across BHP’s exploration, mining and legacy asset interests to underpin decision making across BHP’s numerous value chains.
  • Execute BHP’s second line assurance activities where applicable.
  • Development of the awareness and capability of BHP geoscientists in the application of integrated geology and geophysics to resource exploration and extraction.
  • Build trusted relationships with and between BHP exploration/access and appraisal groups.
  • Identify key knowledge gaps in the ability to integrate geology, geophysics and data management to image and model the subsurface and maintain research roadmaps to influence allocation of resources to R&D initiatives.
  • Influence, lead and manage fundamental geoscience research to address knowledge deficiencies identified collaboratively with asset or functional peers within BHP.
  • Promote BHP as leaders in integrated geology-geophysics to the external technical community, including universities, research institutions and professional organisations.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated 15 years of application of geophysics and integrated geology-geophysics interpretation to exploration for or development of mineral or petroleum resources.
  • Has a record of successfully mentoring and coaching geoscientists.
  • Track record of discipline leadership internal and external to the organisation.
  • Has led teams achieving innovative breakthroughs in understanding or application of geophysics to constrain geological models.
  • Demonstrated deep technical understanding of fundamental geophysics, petrophysics and integration of geology-geophysics and evidence of technical thought leadership in influencing research directions.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt to new concepts through breadth of applied science-based work experience.
  • Credibility as a Thought Leader in industry and academic technical communities.
  • Required: Tertiary qualification in Geoscience
  • Postgraduate degree (MSc/PhD) in geoscience (geophysics focus)
  • Recommended: Bilingual in English and Spanish.
