About the role

  • Legal Counsel providing business-oriented legal advice and guidance at Aflac. Focusing on legal research, corporate law, and compliance issues with executives.

Responsibilities

  • Provides legal advice and recommendations to executives and management regarding matters of complexity which have or may have a material dollar impact on business activities and operations
  • Evaluates potential legal issues related to business practices and policies and advises management accordingly
  • Evaluates the impact of new laws and regulations on our business practices
  • Combines a knowledge of one or more legal specialties with sound business acumen and knowledge of the business goals and objectives as they relate to the matter at hand
  • Conducts detailed research regarding legal principles and precedents and consults with outside counsel on legal strategies, as needed
  • Leverages an in-depth knowledge of 1934 Act reporting and 1933 Act registered and exempt offerings, as well as SEC reporting and compliance to provide advice and recommendations to executives and management on complex matters which have or may have a material financial impact on business activities and operations
  • Operates under general direction from legal team management
  • Performs other duties as required

Requirements

  • Juris doctor from an ABA-accredited school of law
  • Seven years of legal experience in a combination of law firm and corporate settings
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted
  • Excellent legal research skills
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Excellent legal and business judgment
  • Ability to prioritize and coordinate projects and cases
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills to effectively interact with legal colleagues, management, and Aflac staff
  • Ability to provide business-oriented legal advice
