Responsibilities
Lead, coach and develop a team of claims legal counsel, fostering performance, engagement and professional growth
Plan and allocate resources to effectively manage workload and meet business needs within assigned areas
Provide overall leadership for litigated claims, including coverage and extracontractual matters, by developing and enforcing litigation strategies, policies and best practices
Deliver superior coverage and litigation outcomes through technical leadership, legal advice and oversight of key performance indicators
Establish, monitor and continuously improve quality standards to ensure consistency and high-quality legal services
Manage litigation expenses and departmental budgets, ensuring effective cost controls and appropriate use of resources
Provide legal advice on complex coverage and extracontractual issues to claims managers, claims legal counsel, underwriting partners and senior stakeholders
Identify opportunities to enhance technical excellence through training, contribution to product development, policy wording review and endorsement recommendations
Design and deliver targeted training programs to strengthen legal, technical and operational skills across the organization
Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to identify opportunities for operational improvement, risk mitigation and improved client outcomes
Requirements
Juris Doctor (JD) and 7 or more years of legal experience
7+ years of combined legal experience in insurance, coverage litigation, extracontractual litigation and/or professional liability litigation (errors and omissions)
Active member of the Bar of a Canadian province
Experience using legal research tools such as Lexis or Westlaw, and MS Office
Proven experience collaborating across multiple business lines and with senior stakeholders
Excellent oral, written and facilitation skills, with the ability to present effectively to claimants, clients and internal partners
Advanced technical experience in one or more property and casualty (P&C) insurance lines
