About the role

• Backend Engineer (Data Science / ML) developing and maintaining backend microservices at Zalando. Engaging with Data Science and Machine Learning topics to drive innovation and data-driven solutions.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement predictive delivery models using Databricks with Apache Spark
• Translate complex data into real-time backend insights
• Take ownership of new features, taking them from idea to technical design, and from technical design to cross system implementation
• Help to be a better team by continuously reflecting upon our ways of working and suggesting improvements
• Actively participate in the entire product development lifecycle, from initial concept and design through to development, testing, deployment, and operation
• Taking full ownership of your features and their impact on partners
• Proactively identify and solve complex technical challenges
• Approach problems with a 'Partner First' mindset to deliver solutions that simplify daily operations

Requirements

• Solid command of Kotlin, additional JVM based languages (Scala or Java)
• Knowledge of software patterns and paradigms like continuous integration, test automation and deployment pipelines
• Strong command of Databricks with Apache Spark
• Comfortable taking the model from a notebook and wrapping it in a high-performance Kotlin microservice deployed on Kubernetes
• Strong interest (or foundational experience) in Data Science, Applied AI, or Machine Learning
• Experience with large datasets
• Solid understanding of how data structures impact the performance of ML-driven applications
• Experience in specifying, planning, developing, maintaining and operating microservices using REST API (OpenAPI), Cloud Platforms (AWS, Kubernetes), PostgreSQL
• Good communication and collaboration skills
