About the role
- PostgreSQL Database Administrator managing and optimizing database environments, ensuring performance and availability at Alongside. Collaborating on projects and providing on-call support.
Responsibilities
- Administer and maintain **PostgreSQL databases** (on-prem and cloud environments)
- Manage database lifecycle, including upgrades, patching, and performance tuning
- Design and implement **backup, recovery, and high availability (HA/DR)** strategies
- Monitor system performance (CPU, memory, storage) and plan capacity needs
- Ensure **system-level and database-level security**, including access control and authentication
- Analyze and optimize queries using performance tools (e.g., Explain Plan, profilers)
- Support **deployment and change management**, including schema updates and CI/CD pipelines
- Troubleshoot incidents and perform root cause analysis
- Collaborate with developers and architects on database design (schemas, indexes, views)
- Improve monitoring, automation, and error-prevention processes
- Participate in project activities and **24/7 on-call rotation**
Requirements
- Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field
- Hands-on experience with **PostgreSQL** (on-prem and cloud)
- Experience with other databases (e.g., **MongoDB, SQL Server, Oracle**) is a plus
- Strong knowledge of **backup/recovery, HA/DR, and performance tuning**
- Experience with database security (system-level and application-level)
- Familiarity with **capacity planning and resource management**
- Experience with deployment processes and CI/CD integration
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams
